Things You Should Know About Dotson Puppies

These cuddly, small and absolutely adorable Dotson puppies are perfect for every home, including ones with children.  Dachshund is their proper name but they are often referred to as hot dogs, wiener dogs and doxies.  No matter what you call them, the American Kennel Club says they are by far one of the most popular breeds.

Dotson puppies originated as hunting dogs in Germany, used for seeking out badgers that burrowed in the ground.  Dachshund actually means “badger dog” in German and they were bred specifically to hunt these little underground creatures that were considered quite a nuisance.  These puppies, with their long bodies and short legs could dig their way into the burrows that the badgers had created and kill them.  Badgers are an aggressive creature so these dogs, as small as they are, have a lot of fight in them.

Today, Dotson puppies are rarely finding themselves doing any type of hunting but they do still have the same high stamina characteristic and enjoy a lot of exercise.  It is recommended to get these dogs as puppies when possible since they do require a proper training but that is not to say you should pass up an adult one in need of adoption either.  They are smart and eager to learn.  Dotson puppies are very demanding of your attention but they are also loyal and form a strong bond with their master at a young age.

These puppies will dig, so if you are highly attached to your garden or flowers, you may want to consider putting up a high border that they cannot get over.  They were bred to dig so it is in their nature.  They can of course be trained not to with a bit of patience by you.  Training stubborn Dotson puppies can be a battle to see who will give in first.  Although they are a small breed by nature, they can be a handful and you may feel a bit overwhelmed if you have never dealt with a breed of this type of character.

Dotson puppies can have three different types of coats including smooth, wire-haired or long-haired.  The wire-haired and long-haired will require a bit more grooming but they are a “odor free” dog so you won't need to bathe them any more often then the smooth breed but they will need a good brushing daily.

Back problems can be an issue with Dotson puppies as they age also, due to the long torso.  Spinal disc issues are the most common problems that you should be aware of.  They also face problems like heart disease, diabetes and urinary tract issues.  Obesity can also be common if the dog is allowed to over eat.  Many dog breeds will only eat when they are hungry or eat until they are full but these dogs will eat as much as you allow them.  Any extra weight will be added stress to their back so when choosing Dotson puppies, you must commit to watching their food intake and giving them plenty of exercise to avoid them becoming overweight and lazy.

These dogs are an ideal pet due to their extremely long lifespan that averages around 15 years.  They are generally eager to please despite spurts of stubbornness and they love to cuddle.  Wherever you are sitting or laying, expect them to be burrowed close to you.  When initially bringing Dotson puppies home you should exercise caution around your children or other animal until they have established their place in the home and formed a bond with those around.  You should be advised that these dogs like to bark so although they are small and well suited for apartment life, your neighbors may not appreciate your furry friend as much as you do.

Dotson puppies can most definitely be a challenging breed but they are well worth the effort.  They will love you and be loyal and you will always have a cuddling companion to come home to.
