Mongrel Puppies
Things You May Not Know About Mongrel Puppies
Mongrel puppies are a mixed breed puppy whose ancestry is usually not known and portrays characteristics of at least two types of dogs but often many more. The term given to these puppies is “random-bred” which means an animal that has been bred without planning by humans and whose genetic make-up is usually not known. For example, your female dog comes home pregnant and you have no idea what other dog she has been with, her puppies are going to be mongrels.
In the United Kingdom, the term mongrel is the technical name used to describe a mixed-breed dog but many people will speak of such a dog in a derogatory tone calling them mutt, tyke and cur. In Hawaii they are called a poi dog and in the Bahamas they are referred to as pot cakes. Other names are pavement special, vira-lata, askals, bitsa (little bits of this and that) and fice but truth be told, these puppies make some of the most loving, charming and adorable pets you will find.
Trying to guess the ancestry of mongrel puppies is extremely difficult, even for professionals because there is so much variation in genetics even in purebreds. Since 2007, cheek swabs and blood samples have made it easier to narrow down the ancestry of these puppies but sometimes not an exact blood line. The test is more of an indication of the common ancestry found within the puppy. For instance, a test may show that your dog has the Husky breed in it but somewhere down the line there is also a good chance that it contains Alaskan Malamute as well.
In general, mongrel puppies are said to be healthier then purebred puppies. They are more genetically diverse giving them a decreased chance that they will carry a defect true to a certain breed since they are not purebred. Healthy traits are often lost in purebred puppies because the breeders are more concerned with physical attributes then the health and temperament.
Mongrel puppies often grow up to excel at dog activities like agility, obedience, Frisbee and fetch. Since many of these dogs end up in shelters, they are more then wiling to learn any trick their new owners are taking the time to teach them and they are content playing and performing the trick over and over as long as it is getting them their much needed attention. Mongrel puppies are some of the most mentally and physically stimulated puppies you will find.
There are many trainers that believe that mongrel puppies have a higher intelligence than purebred pups. People love owning these puppies because each one has a unique physical appearance and unpredictable but always sweet characteristics.
Your puppy is the most important one in the world to you and it doesn't matter if you picked him out of a litter of mongrel puppies or not. No matter what breed the came from, they will still be your loyal companion, wag their tail and fall over themselves to give kisses every time you walk in the door to let you know how much you are loved. Mongrel puppies will be happy to treat you like you are the only person in the world.
Be patient with your puppy, give him a nice place to sleep and be sure to keep him clean and groomed. Mongrel puppies usually have an abundance of energy so be sure to exercise him everyday (you cannot get an upset with a puppy for getting into mischief that as not been exercised to burn some of that energy off), keep him on a leash and get him a license. Mongrel puppies make just as loving puppies as any purebred one and they need a loving home too.
