Zuchon Puppies

Facts & Fun with Zuchon Puppies

Zuchon puppies are not purebreds but a hybrid cross between the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu breeds and are sometimes referred to as Shichon. They are generally well mannered dogs that are loving and dependent. They are highly sociable, crave human company and are very comfortable living indoors. They bark, especially when left alone, but not excessively making them a fairly decent watch dog. They get along well with children as well as other pets.

Benefactors of what is called hybrid vigor-a trait exclusive to crossbreeds that allows for the elimination of some genetic diseases, Zuchon puppies are a good choice for the family that has allergies. They do not shed and are very hypo-allergenic due to their particular breeding known as heterosis. It is responsible for the breeding of a more vibrant and healthy pet as they have none of the genetic disorders of their parent breeds.

The history of the Zuchon is short although they originated in the United States within the last ten years. They are ideally bred from purebred parents and are a mere 10-12 inches long and tip the scales at a slight 10 pounds. Many people enjoy teaching their Zuchon puppies tricks such as jumps or flips because they are extremely intelligent and learn quickly.

A normal play routine will provide all the exercise Zuchon puppies nee. Because they are content being indoors their exercise regimen is minimal but they will gladly run around the yard chasing butterflies. These puppies are devoted companions, and though they love everyone will typically bond with a single family member frequently following wherever that person goes. They are very well suited for the elderly and handicapped individuals as they are basically lap dogs and their cuddliness is second to none.

Grooming demands for Zuchon puppies are stringent. They need to be brushed at least once a week, although daily is preferred to keep their soft curly fur from matting and to give them the desired teddy bear look. Though perfect for dress up and poodle cuts most owners prefer a short body cut with a round face that lets their eyes peek out from beneath bushy bangs and accented with painted toenails and ribbons. Of course basic grooming techniques need to be observed such as checking the ears for mites, nail clipping, etc. Unless they have been rolling around in the mud, dogs generally require bathing every 2-4 weeks.

Although Zuchon puppies are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club they are not in themselves an actual dog breed but merely a designer dog. Except for the fact that designer dogs have a documented pedigree through their parents there is nothing that separates them from the average mutt.

While hybrid vigor helps guard against genetic disorders they do tend to be susceptible to ear infections, hip dysplasia and thyroid disorders. These adorable animals are a low maintenance pet that proves to be a very loyal and a highly rewarding pet owner experience.
